EcoMer® is
a family of novel patented sugar-based macromers
that are now available to polymer manufacturers
as biobased building blocks to create new
waterborne sugar-acrylic adhesives and resins.
The sugar used to produce EcoMer is derived
from an annually renewable resource, such
as glucose or dextrose from cornstarch. They
are the first collection of harmless new
monomers to be introduced to the adhesive
industry in 20 years.
EcoMer can be
produced at various viscosity levels, ranging
from a resinous solid to a pumpable liquid.
It is available as a 40% solution in butyl
acrylate comonomer (low viscosity), and in
pure form (a solid with a softening point
of about 53 ºC).
Both of these products are close to 100% active
in monomer. It can be chemically joined (copolymerized)
to conventional acrylic building blocks (acrylic
monomers) to create sugar-based copolymers
for widespread applications including adhesives,
inks and toners.
Product Attributes
EcoMer is a novel biosynthetic family of macromers
that imparts biobased content. EcoMer can replace
potentially damaging and non-renewable petrochemicals
in many products within the adhesives, composites,
industrial coatings, plastics and paints industries.
It can also provide exciting opportunities
to create entirely new biobased products using
varying polymerization techniques.
At this time,
samples of the EcoMer biobased building blocks
are only available after execution of a Product
Evaluation Agreement.
